The Adriatic eco-destination

The quality of the water in the Adriatic is very well preserved. The results reached through the constant measuring of the quality of water on more than 800 beaches are in accordance with the strictest criteria. Except for the cleanliness of the sea, another important quality of the coastal area is its biological and geographical particular quality, which can be seen in the number of species of plants and animals, and in the high number of endemic species (for example human fish. In order to protect and preserve such natural wealth, a list of rare and endangered species, the so called Red Book, has been made.

The salinity of the Adriatic Sea is 38,30 per mil averagely, i.e. there is 38,30 g of salt dissolved in 1 kg of water.
In the northern part, the salinity is somewhat lower than in the middle and southern part because of the influence of the Po River.

Wind and weather

Weather conditions in the Adriatic are affected by the general weather situation in the Mediterranean and local climate conditions. Temperature of water is around 25 °C in the summer. There are several typical Adriatic winds. The bora is a strong north-easterly mountain wind. It blows most fiercely in following areas: the Gulf of Trieste, Kvarner, the Velebit Channel, the area around Šibenik, the area around Split, Peljesac and area around Dubrovnik. In summer, it lasts only a few hours and usually no longer then one or two days. The scirocco (jugo in Croatian) is south wind. It often blows for several days and rings thick clouds, great air humidity and rain. The maestral is northwest wind in good weather and begins to blow about 11 AM and usually dies down in the afternoon. Repeats its circle, after a quiet night, the next day. In the summer months, storms in the Adriatic are sudden and violent, but they don´t last long and some of them leave behind pleasantly cool air. The other less frequent Adriatic winds are: the south-westerly libeccio, the easterly levante etc.
